Chai Hu Gui Zhi Tang is the most common formula I recommend for treating colds and flus at home. In my decade of clinical experience treating a wide range of respiratory illnesses ranging from mild to severe, I have found that this formula is much more effective for most cold and flu patterns than the more commonly used formulas like Yin Qiao San and Gan Mao Ling. 
 
Granule extract. For adults, take 20 grams/day dissolved in warm water per day, starting at the earliest onset of cold or flu symptoms and throughout the duration of the illness. 
 
Capsule formula. For adults, take 40 capsules (20 grams) per day, starting at the earliest onset of cold or flu symptoms and throughout the duration of the illness.
 
For long term immune support and prevention, take 5 to 10 grams per day. 
 
Chai Hu Gui Zhi Tang is a valuable formula to have in your home remedy cabinet. It's also important to understand that treatment of respiratory illness in Chinese Medicine is highly nuanced depending on symptom presentation and severity. Chai Hu Gui Zhi Tang works by strengthening your innate immune system, improving lymphatic drainage, and with herbs that have direct anti-viral action. Some people may find that they sleep lighter if taking Chai Hu Gui Zhi Tang in the evening. This is due to the immune tonic herb Ren Shen (ginseng).
