About Us

Chinese Medicine of Idaho is a family owned and operated acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine clinic. Sean and Mara met at the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine in Portland, OR. After a friendly trip to the farmer’s market and Portland arboretum, they realized they had more in common than their graduate degree and have been together ever since.  After four rainy years in Stumptown, they completed their Master’s program and eventually landed in Boise, drawn to Idaho for its wealth of pristine rivers, beautiful forests, and epic mountains. When they aren’t at the clinic, they can be found rafting and kayaking, exploring the backcountry, or relaxing at home with their cat, Inigo.

Chinese Herbal Medicine Specialist

When you need Chinese Herbs, you need them to work. That's why Sean has dedicated his career to the mastery of Chinese Herbal Medicine.

Sean love affair with herbs began when he was in his teens attending a wilderness survival school near his home in Mt. Shasta CA. It began as an interest in edible plants; the ability to recognise and utilize the sustenance available all around us in the natural world.  It was to him like breaking nature’s code; he learned how to see, feel and taste the subtle differences that revealed a plant’s purpose. He was hooked, and from wild edible plants it was a short leap to herbal medicine, the age-old human fascination with the alchemy of plants and their power to heal.

Sean attended college at University of California Santa Cruz where he majored in Environmental Studies, studying botany, sustainable agriculture and farming practices.  Santa Cruz was a hot-bed of herbalists, and it was there he met his lifelong mentor and friend, Darren Huckle, a Chinese Medicine practitioner as well as western herbalist.  Chinese Herbal medicine was the next logical step in Sean’s journey; as it offered thousands of years of organized medicinal knowledge within a highly developed and holistic system of medicine.  Chinese Medicine was the meeting point of Sean’s two passions: plants and helping people heal.

After finishing his undergraduate degree, Sean attended the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, where he met his future wife, Mara.   After finishing school Sean’s drive to learn and grow as a practitioner didn’t slacken. He continued to study with various teachers in both acupuncture and chinese herbal medicine, including ….. .  Research and new evidence as well as time-tested traditional knowledge are both very important to Sean in his practice, and he spends time making sure he is in touch with both.

Sean practices a variety of styles of both Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture at Chinese Medicine of Idaho as well as cupping, moxibustion, and therapeutic massage.  He values detail, deep listening, and treats each person as the unique and valued individual that they are.

When he isn’t reading up on case studies or treating a patient he can be found elk hunting in the mountains, fishing, gardening, or hiking with his wife.  He also enjoys a good cup of tea and a snuggle with the cat.

Mara has always been intrigued and amazed by the capabilities of the human body and mind. She brings a joy, creativity, and intuitive understanding of the body into her practice as an acupuncturist and bodyworker. With each treatment she strives to create an interaction that is comfortable, healing, and very human. She feels that every individual should have the care and support they deserve.

Mara is a Licensed Acupuncturist and Diplomate of Oriental Medicine with the NCCAOM. She holds a Master’s Degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine in Portland, OR where she studied acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine and nutrition, and Tuina and Zen Shiatsu Massage.

Mara uses a variety of acupuncture styles including Master Tung’s Magic Points, the Balance Method, Traditional Chinese Acupuncture, and orthopedic acupuncture. She also practices a variety of non-insertive therapeutic techniques such as Zen Shiatsu and Tuina massage, Essential Oil Acupoint Therapy, cupping, and moxibustion.

Sean started studying botany at age 16, and first encountered herbal medicine at a wilderness survival school in Northern California. Early curiosity quickly turned into a deep passion for herbal medicine. He apprenticed with the American School of Herbalism for 5 years and then studied 4 years at the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, deepening
